Once all the gifts were opened and Evelyn had inventoried each piece of baby paraphernalia so she could go back to get doubles, everyone went back upstairs to get ready for the rest of the day.

Charlie showered quickly. Not only did she want to be ready in time to help Evelyn in the kitchen, but she was worried the nightmare that had woken her that morning would return and break her. She didn’t want anything to ruin the day. Until last night, it had been two weeks since the last nightmare. The last one had been after the encounter with him at the mall, and honestly, she hadn’t thought about him too much since then. She didn’t know why the nightmare had come this time. She just wanted him to go away forever.

As she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to rid her mind of the things that haunted her whenever that moment came back—his voice, his smell, his touch—the most amazing thing happened. The babies moved. It was just a flutter, but she knew instantly what it was.

Setting her hand on the small bump, she willed them to do it again, wanting to make sure it had actually happened. After a few minutes, when she was about to give up, another flutter moved through her. It was the most incredible feeling she’d ever experienced. It made the whole pregnancy real. It made her forget about him.

Chance and Gabby arrived around three for the huge meal Evelyn had made. Now that Charlie had felt the babies move, it seemed like that’s all they did. But she mentioned it to no one. She wanted to tell Gideon first.

Several times during dinner Evelyn tried to get Charlie to go against Gideon’s orders and have an ultrasound so she could find out the sexes of the babies. Charlie adamantly refused. Evelyn might have been able to skirt Gideon’s request that they wait for him before doing anything for the babies under the guise of Christmas, but Charlie wouldn’t find out the sex of the babies without her husband next to her.

Just as everyone was finishing dessert, the phone rang. All conversation stopped, and Evelyn jumped out of her seat to run for the phone. Charlie knew it would be Gideon. She smiled at just the thought of being so close to talking to him.

“Oh, Gideon.” Evelyn’s voice carried into the dining room.

Charlie couldn’t wait to hear his voice and tell him about the new development with the babies. She was sure this was the thing that would get him excited again—to know they were moving around and pushing each other out of the way.

Evelyn was gushing to Gideon, and when she mentioned the twins, Charlie cringed, hoping he wouldn’t be too upset that she’d told them.

Eventually, Evelyn came into the dining room and handed the phone to Peter. Charlie’s bladder was starting to protest, and now that the babies were moving, she was even more uncomfortable. But she wanted to wait until after she talked to Gideon.
